Brigette - 2012 Healthies Award Recipient
I started my health journey in October of 2010. My cholesterol was through the roof and my weight was the highest it had ever been. I got really concerned and visited my doctor; he told me I had 3 months to get it under control, or he would put me on medication. His recommendation was simple; diet and exercise. It’s what we always hear and make millions of excuses as to why we can’t. Having a three-year-old son, I knew I didn’t want to be on medication the rest of my life. I told myself that I needed to do this for me and for him.
Working in the field (and not in an office), our schedules are tough sometimes, coming home late and working long hours. I had to make a commitment that I could keep: exercise three times a week for one hour a day. It has been over a year since I put that goal in place and followed it. To date, I have lost more than 50 pounds and still counting. I feel great, but most importantly, after one month of the famous “diet and exercise” recipe, my cholesterol has been under control.
Hating exercise is a recipe for disaster. So instead, I focus on trying activities that I enjoy, such as running, Pilates, and soccer. I also involve myself in activities that I can do with other people who have healthy habits. They help me get motivated and push me to meet my goals and continue my healthy lifestyle. One big accomplishment was running a half marathon in November. I never would have imagined doing so a year ago.
The consistency of working out 3 times a week and moderate diet changes has made me reach my goal of SIGNIFICANTLY improving my health and self confidence.
